James Wilson hopes to get more game time for Manchester United over the coming weeks.
Louis van Gaal has promoted Wilson to his senior squad this season and gave him 17 minutes against Everton recently.
The striker, who scored twice on his Premier League debut against Hull in May, is optimistic he will see more action for United and would love to be involved in Sunday’s Manchester derby.
“Obviously, it would be great to get on the pitch for a few minutes,” he said. “Any minutes on the pitch really, whether it’s for the first team or the Under-21s is great for me to get my fitness back.
“It was great being on the pitch being with the players and getting involved against Everton. It was brilliant, getting on, it was great.”
Wilson replaced Radamel Falcao against Everton and says he has to pinch himself to be playing with him, Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie.
“He came up to me and did the clap of the hands as he came off, and said ‘good luck’,” Wilson told Manchester United’s official website
“It’s great to come on for such a striker like that, a player in the world of football so it was a great experience.
“It’s great to be in contention with such names in the world of football as theirs. Obviously with the competition in training and even in the games as well, if I can just get a few minutes here and there, then hopefully I can get my chance further down the line.”
Van Gaal promoted Wilson after offloading Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez in the summer and he feels he has a chance to stake a first-team claim.
“It’s an important time for me,” he said. “Obviously with those two going, Chicha on loan and Danny getting a move to Arsenal, it’s given me a great opportunity.
“It’s going to be really important for me to get the minutes on the pitch.”
